DJ Khaled & Kodak Black Dragged Into Lawsuit Involving French Montana

Back in December, it was reported that French Montana was involved in a lawsuit for allegedly stealing the beat for his track “Lockjaw,” and while “Unforgettable” was his biggest hit of last year, the Kodak Black-featured “Lockjaw” affirmed to everybody that French was not playing around. Unfortunately, the song has gotten him in some trouble as Moroccan producer, Yo Asel, is aiming to involve more people in the suit. The producer claims that the beat for “Lockjaw” is simply an altered version of a copyrighted instrumental he had sent to French. According to Bossip, DJ Khaled and Kodak Black have both been brought into the drama.

Both are denying having any knowledge of French allegedly stealing the beat and slightly changing it to make “Lockjaw.” Production credit is given to Ben Billions on the song and Kodak and Khaled are both saying that Yo Asel has no grounds to sue as he does not own the copyright. Copyright for the song is allegedly owned by “Give Thanks Publishing,” according to the court documents. Although “Lockjaw” has since gone platinum, the pair of Kodak and Khaled are denying any involvement in stealing the beat, noting that if anybody owes Yo Asel anything, it would be people that aren’t involved in the formal suit. Both have denied that the song has any obvious similarities to Asel’s beat, refuting his claims and asking the judge to dismiss the case.

Yo Asel claims to be “damaged beyond repair by French’s alleged song theft,” asking for financial damages and a portion of the song’s earnings to this point.
