Not only has Ice Cube solidified himself as one of hip-hop’s most respected legends, but he’s also amassed an impressive filmography under his belt. From his excellent turn as Dough Boy in Boyz N The Hood, to his more comedic roles in films like Friday, 21 Jump Street and Fist Fight, Cube has proven his versatility goes well beyond the mic. Now, the larger than life figure has decided to once again step in front of the camera for a starring role, in a film that sounds like it’s going to be a powerful and compelling watch.
Deadline reports that Cube’s latest movie, Excessive Force, will be directed by Carl Franklin, and written by Ice Cube and Jeff Kwatinetz. While we have yet to hear much in the way of plot development, the report indicates that the film will deal with racism and systematic corruption, particularly within the police force. The film is clearly a passion project for Cube; his production company, Cube Vision, is co-producing alongside Joe Roth. An official release date has yet to be announced, but Excessive Force has been confirmed to be heading into production this fall.
You’ve gotta hand it to Ice Cube. It’s crazy to think that some younger fans may not even know about his music career; his filmography is simply that prolific. While his comedic chops are always welcome, it should be nice to see Cube once again showcasing the dramatic flair. Stay tuned for more news on Excessive Force as it develops.
