Two-time champion Victoria Azarenka pulls out of Australian Open

Victoria Azarenka has become the latest big-name star to pull out of the Australian Open.

The two-time champion in Melbourne, currently ranked 210 in the world, had been handed a wild-card entry but is now not competing.

The 28-year-old is “unable to travel to Australia this year”, according to organisers.

Azarenka, who triumphed in Melbourne in 2012 and 2013, had previously missed numerous tournaments due to an ongoing child custody battle.

Tournament director Craig Tiley said: “It’s unfortunate that Azarenka is unable to travel to Australia this year. The Australian Open is her favourite tournament and she’s looking forward to returning to Melbourne next year.”
