West Brom reveal Cyrille Regis funeral date

Premier League clubs will hold a minute’s applause for the former England international at games over the weekend.

Cyrille Regis’ funeral will be held at the end of the month after the former West Brom striker died on Sunday.

The 59-year-old passed away suddenly at the weekend and his private funeral will be on Tuesday, January 30, the Baggies have announced.

An open-air service for fans and the football community to join the family will be held at The Hawthorns in the East Stand at 11am following the funeral.

There will be seats available to supporters and the general public to pay tribute to the ex-Coventry striker with Albion confirming the details next week.

Regis’ funeral cortege will leave The Hawthorns at 8.45am on January 30 and the club are making plans to accommodate fans who wish to pay their respects before it leaves.

Premier League clubs will also hold a minute’s applause for the former England international at games over the weekend.

An announcement came on Friday after growing pressure with the league initially not planning anything, although Everton were holding a minute’s applause when they host West Brom on Saturday.

But following a backlash the Premier League confirmed clubs will pay tribute to Regis, who was recognised as a pioneer for black players.

A statement read: “The Premier League recognises the important career of Cyrille Regis, and his special role as a trailblazer for black players in modern English football.

“Clubs will mark his contribution with a minute of applause and the wearing of black armbands at this weekend’s matches.

“The League embraces requests from clubs and stakeholders to celebrate the lives of people who have made a unique contribution to the sport.”

Regis made 297 appearance for Albion, scoring 112 goals, while he also earned five caps for England and won the FA Cup with Coventry in 1987.
